Who Is Using Google Apps? FriendFeed API Analysis

Monday, April 21st, 2008

Who is using Google Apps for their email?  FriendFeedStats is now a pretty large database of users so I wrote a quick script using the FriendFeed API to compile a list of Google Apps users by checking the MX records for everyone’s blog.

Some heavy hitters make the list including FriendFeed, Mashable, Lifehacker, Perez Hilton, kwiry, GitHub, Twitter, Disqus, USTREAM.TV, LibraryThing, Techmeme, Hulu, Common Craft, tipjoy, TwitPic, deviantART, Weebly, Coding Horror, and I Can Has Cheezburger.

Also some well known bloggers like Mathew Ingram, Bwana, Chris Brogan, VentureBeat, Paris Lemon, Internet Duct Tape, Loic Le Meur, Jason Calacanis, Simon Wilson, and myself are using Google Apps.

It’s good enough for them; is it good enough for you?

Yes I did go through this 2058 line file to find the popular sites above.

Switching to SliceHost from DreamHost

Monday, February 4th, 2008

I’ve flicked the switch to move all of my sites from DreamHost to SliceHost.  I’ll be keeping DreamHost for the time being because they offer a lot of storage and I use DreamHost as a backup solution by rsyncing my home directory.  I’ve already tested a few sites; the speed increase (especially on my Django sites) is ridiculous.

Until DNS settles down; expect wonkiness.  Everything on SliceHost is setup to use my DreamHost databases so once the DNS propagation is complete I’ll dump the data to my SliceHost databases and things will be nice and speedy.

My stream, Pop Secrets, and Dear LazyWeb will continue to grab data; nothing should skip a beat.

The only site staying at DreamHost is our blog and gallery because it holds so much data (pictures) and I’ll never run out of space on DreamHost.

I’ll do a full review of SliceHost and the migration process later.  I hope things go smooth; keep your fingers crossed!
